UK: NEW PROPOSALS FOR SELLING OF TIMESHARES

Article Abstract:

Consumer Affairs Minister, Kim Howells, has announced that laws regarding timeshares should be changed. Sales persons, should not be allowed to set a deadline on the amount of time a person has in which to sign a document and should not pressurise a person or restrict their rights in any way. The proposals have been outlined in a document issued by the department of trade and industry (DTI). The DTI is particularly concerned with those people who are persuaded into buying timeshares abroad. Their advice is not to attend presentations about timeshares unless really interested, and not to take any money, cheque-books or credit cards. It also asks customers to make sure that anything that has been verbally conveyed to them should be in writing before signing. Misleading statements and inducements are also tackled within the document. The deadline regarding comments on the DTI document is 31 July 2000.
