UK: NEW SCHEME TO COMBAT GLOBAL WARMING

Article Abstract:

Essex Wildlife Trust is spearheading a project designed to recreate marine habitats and combat rising sea levels caused by global warming. Over GB[pound] 3mn will be devoted to purchasing the 700-acre Abbotts Hall farm located on the Essex coast, with over 200 acres to be purposely flooded by the sea. Salt marshes will be established to help coastal wildlife cope with rising sea levels under a process known as managed retreat. Five UK-based conservation groups are participating in the scheme, which will become a key part of a conservation initiative involving over 15 miles of Essex coast and over 3,000 acres of land with large amounts of wildlife.

UK: CONCERN AT PROSPECTS FOR MARINE LIFE

Article Abstract:

Pollution, coastal development and over-fishing are putting the UK's marine population at risk, according to a World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) report. The study revealed that 6% of porpoises in the Celtic Sea died every year due to accidents involving fishing fleets. The WWF has urged the UK government to deal with the problem by bringing in an Oceans Act, which would safeguard coasts and seas, as well as establish a larger network of conservation areas and marine national parks.
