UK: BARCLAYS AGAINST CASH MACHINE PLAN

Article Abstract:

Barclays Bank is unhappy with proposals to impose a GB[pound] 0.30 limit on customers using cash machines and believes that fellow members of the Link network will back its stance. Don Cruickshank, who is leading the UK government's review of banking, has recommended the limit, saying that banks which exceeded it would have to answer to the Competition Commission. Barclays Bank claims that the existing system does provide sufficient recompense for the degree of investment in developing and maintaining its network. Mr Cruickshank had previously criticised plans to impose a charge of GB[pound] 1-GB[pound] 1.50 for using the Automated Teller Machines (ATMs).
