UK: PLANS FOR NEW WASTE INCINERATORS

Article Abstract:

A new waste strategy by the government may lead to the construction of up to 130 waste incinerators in England, each burning around 200,000-250,000 tonnes per year. There are currently only 12 municipal waste incinerators in the country. A list drawn up by Friends of the Earth lists 70 possible sites for the incinerators, and includes cathedral sites such as Canterbury and Salisbury, and coastal towns such as Barnstaple, along with larger industrial centres such as Manchester and Liverpool. The locations on the list are sites which have already been offered financial support from the government, through the guarantee of higher prices for electricity produced by waste burning. The strategy aims to meet the European Union requirement that, by 2020, no more than 35% of domestic refuse be sent to landfill, from a current rate of 85%.
