UK: PUBS AND RESTAURANT REFORMS

Article Abstract:

Over 20 reforms are put forward under a new regulatory reform Bill that aims to reduce bureaucracy and simplify matters for business. Restaurants are to be permitted to stay open later, even it they do not offer live entertainment which is the current stipulation. Licensing hours will be relaxed for New Year's Eve with a wider review of licensing hours in general still being carried out but is due before Christmas. Pub firms claim they have had to deal with 70 new pieces of legislation in the past year and that red tape including the EU working time directive and the minimum wage is costing the GB[pound] 500,000 annually. Rules on fire safety and weight s and measures are to be made simpler under the Bill.

UK: S&N CONVERTS PUBS TO TENANTED ESTATE

Article Abstract:

Scottish & Newcastle (S&N), UK based brewer and pub operator, has announced that it is to convert a further 140 of its managed pubs to its tenanted estate. The company believes that it will be able to run these pubs more profitably as franchises and will attempt to encourage more people to become landlords. As part of this initiative the company is to invest around GB[pound] 100,000 in each of these franchised pubs over the next two years.

UK: CADBURY TO LAUNCH CAFES

Article Abstract:

Best-selling chocolate brand Cadbury is to launch a chain of upmarket cafes, "taking the concept of selling chocolate into the new millennium". The pioneer cafe in Bath is reportedly very successful with the new chocolate drinks the best-selling products. Cadbury plans to launch more cafes in gowns and cities across the UK in a bid to compete against coffee houses such as Starbucks and Coffee Republic.
