UK: RAIL PROBLEMS TO DISRUPT CHRISTMAS MAIL

Article Abstract:

Given the huge delays currently being experienced on Britain's rail network, the Post Office has warned that Christmas deliveries will be badly affected. Currently around 50% of the Post Office's fleet of 58 trains are experiencing delays of up to six hours, affecting 10% of the daily volume of the Royal Mail. It appears likely that Railtrack will have to pay a compensation bill in the region of GB$ 15mn, rather than the originally predicted GB$ 10mn. Parcelforce has stopped using a piggyback service to take parcels from London to Scotland by rail and is instead sending all parcels by road. The disruption also puts the Post Office's ability to meet a GB[pound] 392mn profit target his year in jeopardy.

Rail firm complaints climb to 1,800 a day

Article Abstract:

Figures compiled by the UK Rail Regulator have shown that in 1997, 650,000 complaints were made to privatised rail companies. This number has come as a surprise because until this study the official figure was collated from the number of complaints made to passenger watchdogs. For 1997 this number was 9,753. The company which received the most complaints was Virgin West Coast, with 120,000 complaints, the majority concerning punctuality. Some of the rail firms said that they encouraged passengers to write in with comments, and therefore expected a lot of complaints. A spokesman for Silverlink said that letters of complaint were free marketing information.
