UK: NEW TEST COULD DETECT EARLY BIRTHS

Article Abstract:

A new spot-colour test that could determine whether women are likely to give birth prematurely is being developed by scientists at Bristol University . The over-the-counter test, which is similar to a home pregnancy device, has the potential to reduce the huge financial and emotional cost of babies being born too soon. If alerted early, mothers could seek medical advice and have a better chance of carrying their babies to full term. Prematurity is the highest cause of death in newborn babies, with one in 10 premature infants developing a permanent disability such as blindness or cerebral palsy. The UK has the highest rate of premature births in Europe at 47,000 babies out of 670,000 births a year.

UK: OLD CJD VICTIM PROMPTS NEW CONCERNS

Article Abstract:

The National CJD Surveillance unit in Edinburgh has confirmed that a 74 year-old man has died from variant CJD(vCJD) and was twenty years older than the previous oldest victim. Until now it had been assumed that most of the elderly were not at risk from vCJD. Renowned epidemiologist Roy Anderson predicts that 2001 will be a crucial year for assessing how many victims vCJD will claim. If the incubation period proves short, there should begin to be fewer cases by then.
