UK: SALES OF ORGANIC FOODS ARE BOOMING

Article Abstract:

Sales of organic food are increasing by 40% per year in the UK. Growth is unaffected by a lack of evidence as to whether the food is actually safer or more nutritious than non-organic. A survey by Health Which? magazine found 29% of people ate organic food because it tasted better. Some 46% of people felt the food contained more vitamins and minerals, and 60% believed it was healthier. However, it found that despite organic foods containing less pesticides they may not actually be healthier. The growth in the demand for organic food means British farms cannot meet demand and now 80% of organic produce is imported which has raised issues of regulation because imports' labelling is less well policed.

Reaching for the converted

Article Abstract:

The UK market for organic food and drink is approaching 1 billion pounds sterling a year, and supermarkets are becoming strongly aware of the need to respond to this trend. Sainsbury's is to extend its organic range to 500 products in its leading 80 outlets in Oct 1999, while Waitrose is set to introduce an organic home-delivery service. Supermarkets are having to import many of the organic products they sell, as UK suppliers are unable to meet demand.

Farmers are boxing clever

Article Abstract:

There are now an estimated 200 vegetable box schemes in the UK, supplying between 30,000 and 40,000 people with fresh seasonal vegetables. These schemes involve around 30% of the UK's organic farmers. Along with farm-gate sales and farmers' markets, they account for around a fifth of sales of organic foods. Supporters of vegetable box schemes believe that they play a valuable role in supporting the local economy.
