UK: SHOPPING CENTRES SEEK SUNDAY TRADING MOVE

Article Abstract:

The UK government is being urged to ease rules governing Sunday trading by managers at leading shopping centres, including Gateshead's Metro Centre, which has 380 retailers. Talks are taking place between the two sides, but plans to increase the existing six-hour maximum will upset shop workers' unions and religious groups. Retailers say that after Saturday, Sunday is the busiest day for shopping, with supporters saying that for some it is the only convenient day for shopping.

EGYPT: CONCERN OVER SAINSBURY'S CAIRO OUTLET

Article Abstract:

Sainsbury's outlet in Cairo is the focus of a campaign by angry Muslim preachers, while local traders fear that the discount goods being offered could put them out of business. The UK-based retail chain's store is the first international supermarket in Egypt and offers a wide range of items. However, angry clerics have issued an unofficial fatwa on the store, saying that people who shop there can be compared to thieves and adulterers.
