US: DRUGS CAUSE BRAIN DAMAGE

Article Abstract:

A report published in the Journal of the American Academy of Neurology has stated that the drug known as speed, crystal or ice and scientifically named, methamphetamine, can cause brain damage. It can also lead to Alzheimer's disease, epilepsy, brain tumours and strokes. Tests on 26 former users of the drug indicated reduced levels of acetyl-aspartate in the area of the brain that controls the sub-conscious. Reduced levels of n-acetyl-aspartate are found in sufferers of brain disease and indicate brain cell damage. Methamphetamine is the second most widely taken drug after cannabis.

UK: SUPER-CLEAN HOMES COULD RELIEVE ASTHMA

Article Abstract:

By simulating the low humidity conditions of a Swiss alpine chalet, researchers in Sheffield found that asthma attacks improved to the equivalent of 400 micrograms of inhaled asthma drugs. In an experiment, ten homes were cleaned and ventilated to reduce humidity to the same as at an altitude of 4,000 metres. The results of the pilot study will be reported to a meeting of the British Thoracic Society on 13 December. The new technique appears to work because house dust mites, that trigger asthma attacks, cannot survive at low humidity levels.
