UK: TELEWORKING POPULAR AMONG SENIOR PROFESSIONALS

Article Abstract:

The Institute of Employment Studies has found that teleworking is particularly popular among senior professional men, graduates, and married people in their thirties and forties. Almost 70% of teleworkers are men, though they represent only 56% of the workforce. Managers account for 28% of teleworkers; while 22% are professionals, and 18% in skilled and technical occupations. The financial services sector has seen a 34% rise in teleworking over 12 months, while 27% of teleworkers work in the business sector, and 25% in public and voluntary sectors. The increase in the numbers working from home, with 250,000 British people becoming teleworkers in 1999, is attributed to greater acceptance of flexible work patterns and new technologies.

UK: UK PARENTS SPEND MOST TIME WITH CHILDREN

Article Abstract:

British parents spend more quality time with their children than their European or American counterparts. Research by Professor Gershuny of the Institute of Economic and Social Policy Research shows working and non-working parents spend more time with children than they did 35 years ago. The average working mother spends an average 135 minutes each day caring for her young children compared to 32 minutes in 1961. For non-working mothers, the average is 189 minutes a day compared to 95 minutes in 1961. Fathers working full-time invest 88 minutes a day looking after children. On average British mothers spend 30 minutes more than parents from the rest of the world. British fathers spend 50 minutes more than their international counterparts.
