UK: WATER FIRMS REFERRED TO COMMISSION

Article Abstract:

The director general of Ofwat , Mr Ian Byatt, has referred Mid Kent Water and Sutton and East Surrey Water to the Competition Commission for failure to accept the five-year water price-cap proposals. Both companies are understood to have appealed against the price-cap. These cuts would have required Mid Kent cut bills by 1.7% during 2000 and to reduce bills by an average of 4% by the year 2005. Sutton and East Surrey was required to cut its bills by 17% during 2000 and by an average of 5% over the next five years.

UK: THAMES WATER SHELVES MERGER PLAN

Article Abstract:

The UK's leading water supplier, Thames Water, has shelved plans to integrate with a business in its industry and will instead look to focus on enhancing its non-regulated and international operations. Thames Water chief executive, Bill Alexander, believes that a merger would stop the business from attaining a rerating on the stock market and would double its regulatory risk. He had previously backed merger activity involving UK water firms, saying that this would allow them to compete more with large international players such as Enron and Vivendi. Added to this, the UK government is known to favour water market competition as opposed to consolidation. Thames Water is looking to undertake acquisitions in the US and is also seeking a number of water-related build and operate projects.
