US: MARS MAKES CHOCOLATE HEALTH CLAIMS

Article Abstract:

Mars, the US-based confectionery and food group, is sponsoring research into the possible health benefits of a new, patented chocolate-making process. The company claims that the method involves the retention in the chocolate of naturally occurring polyphenols, which have antioxidant properties that reduce the risk of heart disease. While the company is not making any specific health claims, it believes that there is too much guilt surrounding chocolate, and that it may offer some benefits. The new process is being promoted with a 'Cocoapro' trademark and logo. The UK Food Commission, however, has stated that it is highly sceptical of the argument.

UK: ANOTHER TATE & LYLE PROFIT WARNING?

Article Abstract:

UK-based sugar producer, Tate & Lyle, may issue its third profit warning so far 2000 in the wake of a warning by US-based rival, Corn Products International (CPI), on 15 September 2000. CPI noted the sluggish nature of trading in corn oil and other by-products, a factor in the July 2000 warning issued by Tate & Lyle. Soft drinks containing sugar have been impacted by a poor summer while high oil prices have also contributed to the situation.

UK: TATE & LYLE TO AXE 'MR CUBE' SUGAR SYMBOL

Article Abstract:

Tate & Lyle plans to drop its 'Mr Cube' sugar symbol, created in 1949 to fight off the threat of nationalisation, as part of a bid to make more of its 150 year-old brands. The company, which last month issued a profits warning, has already removed the character from its packaging and it is also being withdrawn from all marketing material.
