US: RECORD SURGE IN TRADE DEFICIT

Article Abstract:

The US trade deficit reached new heights in November 1999 as rising imports and oil prices pushed the deficit to US$ 26.5bn. Despite posting record exports of US$ 82.89bn the strong US economy imported goods worth US$ 109.39bn. Analysts feel that a rise in interest rates could weaken domestic demand to remedy the current situation, plus they estimate that the expansion of the US economy in the last quarter of 1999 stood at an annual rate of over 5%.

US-based Avomex has succeeded in creating guacamole which remains fresh for up to one month after manufacture in what is regarded as an important breakthrough in food technology.
