US flunks challenge of new grand design

Article Abstract:

Since President Bush was elected in 1988 the world has changed, but foreign policy has not changed accordingly as the government has no strategist. The reunification of Germany and the failure of the Soviet Union negated the need to maintain balance of power with the Soviet Union. June 1992's arms reduction agreement with Boris Yeltsin counteracted a non-existent threat. President Bush was isolated at the Earth Summit in Rio and postponed his visit to Japan. Geo-politics in the 90's involve the economic struggle between Europe, the US and Japan.

China and America on the edge of the abyss

Article Abstract:

The US remains very uncertain about how to handle relations with China, particularly as China seems increasingly destined to take on the rival superpower role previously held by the former Soviet Union. The official line is that the US is focusing on 'constructive engagement' with China, but unofficially there is growing emphasis on 'containment.' This is likely to be as counter-productive as the similar policy pursued towards the former Soviet Union.

The mighty buck bites the dust

Article Abstract:

The value of the dollar has fallen constantly since the beginning of 1995, contradicting predictions that it would be the dominant currency of 1995. North America's financial credibility has been placed in doubt by the economic crisis in Mexico, and foreign investors are wary about US fiscal policy. It will now take great efforts to return the dollar to favour.
