US poised to deflect criticism of Israel

Article Abstract:

There is a danger of creating very serious tension in the Middle East if the forthcoming report into the attack on a UN camp in southern Lebanon in Apr 1996 simply apportions blame with Israel, according to US diplomats. The US is trying to block any discussion in the Security Council which gives attention to the suspicion that Israel was fully aware of the likely outcome of its attack on the UN camp. The Israeli government has threatened to withdraw its support of Unifil in Lebanon if the report is made public.

Affluent Atlantic jewel jibs at the cost of independence

Article Abstract:

Bermuda, the UK's oldest colony, will become the largest remaining UK dependency when Hong Kong reverts to Chinese sovereignty on Jun 30, 1997. Most of its 60,000 inhabitants are happy for it to remain under UK control, even though it would face no real difficulties as an independent country. Independence was rejected by 73% of the 53% of people who voted on this issue in a referendum held in 1995, and the question of independence is not likely to be addressed again in the foreseeable future.

Sex, death and a Governor's secretary

Article Abstract:

Thomas Capano, a bond lawyer, has been charged with the murder of Anne Marie Fahey, the former scheduling secretary of Thomas Carper, the Democrat Governor of Delaware. It is alleged that Capano murdered Fahey when she sought to end their secret affair. This case has attracted considerable publicity, partly because of the public positions of both Fahey and Capano in local society and partly because Capano has been betrayed by two of his brothers, who have agreed to testify against him.
