Ulster looks into the abyss

Article Abstract:

Events in Northern Ireland in the second week of July 1996 have been very damaging and have caused long-term problems. The initial refusal to let the Orangemen march on July 7 1996 and the change of heart by the chief constable of the Royal Ulster Constabulary, who finally let them march along the Garvaghy Road, in the Roman Catholic part of Drumcree, has led to petrol bombs, violence and riots. According to Sir Patrick Mayhew, the chief constable had to make the decision or a lot of people could have died.

A church in holy disorder

Article Abstract:

Recent revelations about the secret married life of Father Michael Cleary, a highly respected and ultra-conservative Irish Catholic priest who died in 1993, are only one of a number of scandals to have hit leaders of the Catholic church in Ireland. These scandals have badly damaged relations between priests and bishops and ordinary Catholics. The Royal Ulster Constabulary is now conducting a wide-ranging investigation into alleged sexual abuse by priests.

The IRA's grand strategy

Article Abstract:

The IRA is determined to have a high profile in the run-up to the general election in the UK. It has caused disruption to the road and railway systems by instigating security alerts, and even went as far as to cause the Grand National, a major horse race, to be postponed. The organisation wants Ireland to have a high profile during the election campaign, and is also keen to make the incoming government aware that it can cause economic disruption.
