General Powell is neither a hawk nor a dove - he's an owl

Article Abstract:

General Colin Powell has reacted in a calm, rational way to the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon. His military background allows him to call for restraint without being seen as a coward. He must now show courage in peace, remaining firmly committed to the Middle East peace process.

My mixed feelings as our bombers loaded up for Serbia

Article Abstract:

It seems strange that there should be almost universal support for planned Nato military action against Serbia, while many reservations were expressed about the possibility of bombing Iraq in Feb 1998. Nobody really knows how to resolve the situation in Kosovo, Yugoslavia, but there is a strong feeling of wanting to become involved, probably because Europe is geographically closer to developments in Kosovo than those in Iraq. There is a desire to help the displaced ethnic Albanians in Kosovo, and most people seem to think that this help should be in the form of an enforced Serb military withdrawal.

Unfortunately, there really was no alternative to bombing Iraq

Article Abstract:

Those who have been critical of air attacks by the UK and the US on Iraq are generally unable to present a viable alternative for dealing with Iraqi President Saddam Hussein's failure to cooperate with United Nations weapons inspectors. Similarly, it is clear that sanctions against Iraq have had a negative impact on ordinary Iraqis, but it is important to be aware that there are dangers associated with deciding to lift the sanctions. It is not feasible simply to take no action and to allow Iraq to rearm.
