Universities must fight to attract postgrads

Article Abstract:

All UK universities have started to find that fewer students wish to undertake further degrees and research after completing their first degree. In many cases, students are in financial difficulties, and this means that a job seems very attractive compared with a postgraduate stipend. The Asian economic crisis has also reduced the number of postgraduate students from that region. Many universities now have four-year MChem, MPhys and MMaths courses, and this is reducing the number of applications for one-year taught Master's degrees.
