Use triple vision to manage a 1990s business

Article Abstract:

Successful management of a pet shop involves taking control of cash flow and inventory. Effective cash flow management entails estimating available cash and matching it against the expected outflow. The result will then determine the strategy the retailer has to follow, investing a surplus or finding ways of bridging a deficit. Inventory management is based on the equation: Sales + Ending Inventory - Beginning Inventory = Purchases. All of the factors on the left side of the equation have to be considered. The desired turnover rate for each merchandise type and the entire store should be clearly defined.

Take the voodoo out of your advertising budget

Article Abstract:

Advertising needs careful planning and evaluation. First, the pet retailer must set up objectives for his advertising campaign. He must measure its effectiveness directly in terms of customer traffic and awareness of his store and merchandise which would eventually affect the sales. Second, the pet retailer must set aside a budget for his advertising campaign which could be based on the projected sales for the year. A competent advertising group must also be employed to formulate an appropriate and effective campaign.

Livestock leads the way

Article Abstract:

Lyng's Pet and Garden Center is one of the few pet stores that keeps a large selection of livestock on display. In nearly 70 years of business, this has proven to be an effective customer draw. However, most of the profits from the pet operation come from the sale of food. A dog grooming service brings in additional clients. Lyng's has had a 28-year-old policy of running a quarter-page ad in the weekly community newspaper detailing items on sale that has continued up to the present.
