Victims of European diplomacy

Article Abstract:

The EC supported Ante Markovic, leader of the Communist government of Yugoslavia although its six republics hated him. The EC recognised Slovenia and Croatia in Jan 1992 after apparently condoning the Yugoslav army battle against two democratically elected governments. In its eagerness to present an appearance of a common foreign policy, the EC forced Bosnia to hold a referendum on independence, producing an ethnic split and war. Croatia can no longer accept refugees from Bosnia; they will be sent to Italy, Hungary or Slovenia.

However great the human suffering, the offensive could open the way to a resolution of the entire conflict

Article Abstract:

The conflicts in former Yugoslavia could finally be brought to an end in the wake of the recent Croatian attack on the rebel Serb region of Krajina. The approach of Bosnia's Muslim-led government to a possible peace agreement will be determined by how quickly Croatian troops achieve victory in Krajina and whether support is given by Serbian president Slobodan Milosevic. The success of the United Nations arms embargo against the Bosnian government will also be a key factor.

Peace with a terrible price

Article Abstract:

The recent rapid recapture by Croatia of the rebel Krajina Serb region may ensure that the conflicts which have ripped open the former Yugoslavia are resolved more quickly than would otherwise have been the case. A peace agreement may now be reached under which nationality will determine how areas are divided up. This would lead to the complete disappearance of minority communities, with the region being held by three 'nationally pure' states.
