WORLD: IMPACT OF BLUETOOTH TECHNOLOGY ASSESSED

Article Abstract:

Bluetooth is a new global specification covering wireless connectivity and Nokia, Motorola, Psion and Dell Computer are already among its 1,500-plus collaborators. The wireless technology could lead to radical changes in the personal connectivity market because it would render wired connections obsolete. The new technology will allow devises such as personal digital assistants (PDAs), palmtop computers and mobile phones communicate with each other and its objective will be make interaction between people and machines more straightforward. Sweden's Ericsson played a vital part in developing the technology, although any subsequent profits will be gleaned indirectly as no royalty fee or charge framework is in place. It is envisaged that by around 2005, Bluetooth will be used by over 500mn devices. Bluetooth can be used in a broad range of applications and the first device will be a wireless headphone able to interact with a mobile handset and is scheduled to become available later in 2000.

WORLD: CHIP SHORTAGES HIT MOBILE PHONES

Article Abstract:

The price of mobile phones, television set-top boxes and digital cameras are expected to rise due to the worldwide shortage of flash and D-Ram memory chips, according to analysts. The lack of capacity at semiconductor plants may also restrict supplies of various consumer electronics. As a result, some mobile phone businesses are already scaling back production of handsets, with Siemens reducing planned production from 30 million to 27 million during 2000. Flash memory is used in mobiles and set-top boxes to store items such as phone numbers, TV channel settings, user preferences and software.
