WORLD: PERSONAL WEALTH FIGURES BOOSTED BY NET

Article Abstract:

The World Health Report 2000, drawn up by Gemini Consulting and Merrill Lynch reveals that the richest people in the world increased their personal wealth by 18% during 1999, largely thanks to investment in the Internet and technology stocks. It is predicted that they will be 12% richer by the end of 2000. Technology-related wealth, often from flotations of private companies, has led the increase in numbers of 'Ultra-High Net Worth Individuals', with those making their fortunes in this way gradually replacing those who inherit wealth in the US. It is thought that over seven million people have liquid financial assets of over US$ 1mn, while 55,000 have at least US$ 30mn. As many as 514 are dollar billionaires. The UK is thought to have more than its share of rich people.

WORLD: CLIMATE CHANGE BRINGS MORE DISASTERS

Article Abstract:

A growing number of extreme weather events (EWEs) in the last few years are being blamed by many scientists on the impact of global warming on the earth's climate. Around 100,000 people have been killed in over 20 EWEs in the last three years in widespread flooding, drought and storms, while a further 300,000 people have lost their homes or livelihoods. Among the international bodies which attribute the disasters to climate change are the UN, in its report 'Global Environmental Outlook 2000', and the International Federation of Red Cross & Red Crescent societies. The developed world, which accounts for 20% of the world population, is responsible for 80% of the carbon emissions blamed for global warming, but most of the victims of EWEs have been in poor countries.

WORLD: STUDY OF DUAL-CAREER COUPLES

Article Abstract:

For the majority of working couples, the growing realisation that two careers does not allow an adequate quality of life leads to the husband's career becoming the priority, according to research by the New York-based Cornell University. Studies covering 850 dual-career couples revealed that modern marriages are reverting to the roles prevalent in the 1950s of the breadwinner and housewife due to this inability to deal with careers. Researchers stated that archaic employment policies and practices meant that couples have a limited number of options and that working couples are in virgin territory with few measures in place to help deal with joint domestic and work needs.
