'War criminal' is reborn as a peace-maker

Article Abstract:

Serbian president Slobodan Milosevic has until recently been widely portrayed as a war criminal, but is now starting to be seen as a key player in the peace process in the Balkans. He has continually adapted his political stance to fit in with changing conditions, and has been able to gain western support because he was seen as capable of persuading the Bosnian Serbs to enter into negotiations. The Bosnian Serbs now look likely to lose out, but this will not damage Milosevic's reputation.
