We saved the baby; unfortunately the family is cracking up

Article Abstract:

More babies are saved through intensive care, but some of them are severely disabled, affecting their families. Doctors should consider what support the community can give these babies. The Family Fund receives about 11 applications for grants for children under two daily; this is 28% of its registrations, compared to 14% from 1973 to 1987. Parents need a telephone, washing machine and transport. The DSS may not pay visiting costs to those on Income Support. There is a case for allowing these babies the right to die.

Can cocktail tittle-tattle really break a head?

Article Abstract:

Governing bodies of private schools take note of parents' views at the expense of head teachers. Sometimes a small group of parents become powerful without the majority realising what is happening. Some long-standing parents do not appreciate new policies. Governing bodies of public schools are not defined as for state schools and businessmen and old pupils are often appointed through friends. Governors used to leave decisions to the head teacher but in 1992 are more keen to make decisions themselves.

Parents who pick 'n' mix state and private schools

Article Abstract:

It is becoming increasingly common for parents in the UK to move their children in and out of state and independent education. Indeed, one quarter of parents who have a child in an independent school also have one or more children in state schools. Education has become a buyer's market, and independent schools can no longer take it for granted that families will keep their children in the independent sector throughout their time in education.
