We want our hall back, say women

Article Abstract:

The Millicent Fawcett Hall in Westminster is under threat of demolition, but pressure groups are fighting to save it. The building which was connected with the suffragette movement is in a prime site in Westminster and until recently was used as a community hall. Westminster Council want to sell the valuable site after the recession, and to use it as a car park meanwhile to make money. An alliance of womens' groups wish to make the hall a women's centre but their project has not made a high enough bid to buy it.

Vicars, town elders, busybodies - spare us from improvements

Article Abstract:

Many city and town authorities across the UK are becoming aware that they could obtain considerable sums of National Lottery funding for a Millennium Project. In many cases, the projects being planned add nothing at all to the area, and some look shoddy and ill-conceived. It is a cause for considerable concern that church authorities are also seeking to use National Lottery funding. This can lead to attractive churches which have remained unaltered for several centuries being unsympathetically modernized.

The day our publican painted over the Georgian brickwork

Article Abstract:

It is perfectly legal in the UK to make alterations to unlisted buildings in conservation areas, even if those changes seem to totally spoil the character of the building. This situation is being opposed by the English Historic Towns Forum, which seeks to highlight the many inconsistencies in the regulations relating to historic buildings. Extremely damaging changes in conservation areas can be prevented by imposing Article 4 Directions, but these are rarely used.
