Weak yen is Japan's route to recovery

Article Abstract:

The recent fall in the value of the Japanese yen against the dollar will allow Japanese exporters to increase output, and will have a positive impact on business confidence. The Bank of Japan is determined to keep the exchange rate low, and in the longer term aims to deregulate the economy in order to allow it to react more rapidly to the new industrial climate. Changes are resulting from the industrialisation of emerging economies in east Asia, the rise of the yen and the debt problems caused in the late 1980s.

Time for companies to start spending their surplus cash

Article Abstract:

Most economic forecasters believe that industrial investment will start to pick up in 1995, acting as one of the main driving forces behind economic expansion of 3-3.5%. Fixed investment, including government investment and housing, is set to rise by 5.75% in 1995, according to the Treasury. However, there have been few signs of this so far, possibly because companies are still sticking to high target rates of return for investment projects.
