We'll keep the Brown flag flying from the house next door

Article Abstract:

Recent events have highlighted the fact that much of the initiative of the UK government has been shifting away from Prime Minister Tony Blair and towards Chancellor Gordon Brown. It seems that Brown is now the driving force behind the government's visionary policies. He is controlling economic policy, with little intervention from Blair or his advisors, and is also determining developments in relation to European economic and monetary union. This trend reflects a shift within New Labour towards Brown's vision of moderate socialism.

Second term blues may give Brown his chance

Article Abstract:

UK Prime Minister Tony Blair has made it clear that he intends to serve at least two full terms. However, there is no guarantee that he will continue to be extremely popular among ordinary voters. In particular, the European single currency has the potential to cause him considerable problems. In contrast, Chancellor Gordon Brown is able to distance himself from moves towards UK membership of the European single currency. This would place him in a good position to challenge Blair for the leadership of the Labour party.

Safety first: the motto for Mr Blair's second term

Article Abstract:

UK Prime Minister Tony Blair must decide whether to take a radical or cautious approach during a second term in office. It is argued that Blair will not do anything in the area of income tax or the euro that would damage his relations with middle England.
