We've still got to fight for our right to party

Article Abstract:

There have been a number of problems with the organization of the Gay Pride festival in London, England, over recent years. Indeed, some observers are questioning whether Gay Pride is actually required at all any more, given that the social climate in relation to homosexuality has changed so much. Others feel that the social climate has in fact remained largely unchanged, and that Gay Pride should therefore be more politicized. Homosexuality is beginning to be more widely accepted, but it will take a long time to eliminate hatred and ignorance.

I was wrong - we should hand back the Elgin Marbles

Article Abstract:

The Parthenon Marbles are in the British Museum, England, and should be returned to Greece from where they came. Lord Elgin, an ambassador in Turkey, took the Marbles to Britain at the start of the 19th century, claiming he was seeking a safe place for them. Turkey controlled Greece at the time, and gave him permission. The British Museum has preserved the sculptures well, and those left in Greece have been damaged by traffic fumes. The Marbles helped foster understanding of Greek culture, but should go back to Greece.

Alarmingly idiosyncratic, she freed a generation of writers

Article Abstract:

Novelist Iris Murdoch, who has died at the age of 79, gained a strong reputation for her liberating and generous imagination. Her novels are characterized by intricate melodrama and extravagant symbolism. They were unlike any novels written before, and encouraged a whole new generation of novelists to be true to themselves. It can be argued that she reached the peak of her career in the late 1960s and early 1970s, when her novels had extremely powerful readability.
