What I did on my holidays

Article Abstract:

The film 'Primary Colours,' which opened the 1998 Cannes Film Festival, is a human story as well as a political one, according to filmmaker Mike Nichols. He feels that a good story in theatre or film deals with a key period in the lives of the leading characters, regardless of whether they are aware of this at the time. 'Primary Colors' is based on the Clintons' move towards power and marital difficulties, but Nichols feels that the film also has a wider message, looking at whether honour can be redefined.

Directors tell why Hollywood could end up a lost world

Article Abstract:

Hollywood film directors including Robert Altman, Oliver Stone and Martin Scorcese have expressed concern about the future of the film industry. They point to problems such as the dominance of marketing, excessive sums of money being paid to leading actors and films being made on the basis of popularity, rather than quality. They have expressed despair at the impossibility of making a mid-budget film which is artistically satisfying and does not have a top actor or related merchandising.
