What shall we do after class? Let's get physical

Article Abstract:

The Sports Council established the School Sport Forum in 1987 as competitive sport was not offered in many schools. Sports were offered to more pupils in after-school clubs, but teachers were unwilling to help out of school time. Extra-curricular activities at weekends increased in 29% of independent schools between 1983 and 1993, whereas they decreased in 70% of state schools. The national curriculum, GCSEs and pupils' Saturday jobs are reasons for the decrease. Sports associations became involved to promote their sports and provide players for the future.

Teachers who know what they're talking about

Article Abstract:

Teachers at St Thomas's RC Primary School in Staffordshire, England are selected for their subject degrees as well as other criteria. The timetable gives every subject equal time. The school is semi-open plan, divided into areas for maths, English, science, history/geography, art and computers. This provides more room for equipment than an ordinary classroom. Some teachers feel that the children can progress better when taught by subject specialists.
