What's the storey?

Article Abstract:

There is growing awareness in the UK of the need to protect the country's recent architectural heritage, including high-rise council flats. Some of these buildings, including Isokon Flats in Camden, London, England, and Keeling House, in the East End of London, are now being given listed building status. Both of these buildings are derelict, and listing them has presented the local councils responsible for them with significant financial challenges. For this reason, both councils are attempting to sell the buildings. Listing experimental modern buildings is still a very controversial matter.

Drawing on good ideas

Article Abstract:

It is important to take considerable care when selecting an architect to undertake work in your home. It is possible to select an architect merely by looking in the Yellow Pages, but it is worth trying to obtain a personal recommendation. It is important to ensure that the architect fully appreciates your taste in design and furnishings. An architect's fees for domestic work are often 15% of the overall cost, but this can be recouped in the form of savings in the sourcing of building materials and in other areas.

Up, up and away to the high life

Article Abstract:

High-rise apartments are becoming increasingly popular in the UK, especially among those who wish to live within walking distance of their work and of leisure facilities. Apartments are particularly suitable for those who have no time or inclination to undertake DIY work, especially as some are available fully furnished. Some mortgage lenders are unwilling to lend money on properties above a certain level, and attention must be given to future saleability.
