When Haydn met Nelson

Article Abstract:

Joseph Haydn's 'Nelson' Mass, which was completed in Aug 1798 and first performed on Sep 23, 1798, was originally called 'Mass in Time of Fear.' It is not certain whether it became known as the 'Nelson' Mass immediately or whether its name changed in 1800 when Nelson himself spent a short time at Eisenstadt castle near Vienna, Austria. The work begins with a strongly martial tone, but suddenly changes tonality into the major mode. However, the Kyrie offers a particularly terse sonata structure, and minor keys are used throughout the rest of the piece.
