Why Christopher Marlowe was killed: the inside story

Article Abstract:

Christopher Marlowe, the Elizabethan playwright, was reputedly killed by stabbing in Deptford in 1593 when he was 29. He wrote 'The Jew of Malta' and 'Dr Faustus', violent, controversial tragedies which were very popular. He had a reputation for atheism, blasphemy and homosexuality, crimes in the 16th century. Documents found in the 1920's show that he was a spy. Leslie Hotson, the Canadian scholar, traced the coroner's report on the inquest at the Public Record Office. Marlowe had been called for questioning by the Privy Council and it appears a campaign had been organised to discredit him.

Mr Christopher visits the dark continent

Article Abstract:

US secretary of state Warren Christopher recently visited Africa in order to gain African support for the US campaign to stop the re-election of United Nations secretary-general Boutros Boutros-Ghali and to suggest the creation of an 'African Intervention Force,' which would operate in areas of civil unrest. It seems strange that the US should suddenly begin to take an interest in Africa. This approach conflicts with its refusal to pay its contributions to the United Nations, which is undertaking valuable work in Africa.
