Why children are a choice, not a duty

Article Abstract:

It is becoming increasingly common in the UK for couples to decide not to have children. However, many people still find the decision to remain childless very hard to understand, and those who do not wish to have children are often regarded as misguided or needing sympathy. Some are now beginning to defend themselves more vigorously, partly through the British Association of Non-Parents. One of the aims of this organization is to make people aware that the decision to remain childless is not just made by women alone.

Round the houses

Article Abstract:

The child welfare system in the UK is oriented towards placing children in foster care, rather than in institutions. However, it is becoming clear that many foster parents are not sufficiently prepared to cope with vulnerable, unstable children. This means that children are being moved very frequently between foster homes, and some become more emotionally damaged as a result. Recent research indicates that one in eight children in care have moved foster home three or more times.

Building from grief

Article Abstract:

Caring at home for someone who is dying is extremely difficult, according to Hilary Holden, who lost both her four-year-old daughter and her husband to cancer in a very short space of time. After her husband's death, she helped to build the Hospice of the Good Shepherd, a hospice for adults near Chester, England. She has now succeeded in raising the 1.6 million pounds sterling required to build Clare House, a hospice for children. This is scheduled to open in late 1998.
