Why the state can't fix the family

Article Abstract:

The UK government has issued a circular to local authorities and adoption agencies which calls on social workers to promote adoption as a strong option for single mothers. This is seen as a positive way of avoiding abortion or the problems which can arise from bringing up an unwanted child. It goes strongly against the government's philosophy of avoiding state intervention, and comes at a time when the government is already failing to care adequately for those children for which it has responsibility. The government should accept that there are limits to what it can and should try to do.

What did we want: not just abortion

Article Abstract:

Abortion was legalized in the United Kingdom in 1967, and thirty years later abortions have increased, rising to almost 168,000 in 1996. The campaigners in 1967 believed that efficient contraception and sex education would mean an end to abortions except for a very few people, such as young girls. One reason that abortions have increased in number is that women marry later. There is also concern about using contraceptive pills, and there is a biological drive to have children that acts against women's conscious intentions.

TV meets the law of the jungle

Article Abstract:

News Corp, owned by Rupert Murdoch, is set to have effective control over digital television broadcasting in the UK, as access to digital television will only be through the set-top equipment produced by this company. Murdoch will have to ensure that other broadcasters have open access, with Oftel acting as regulator. It is most unlikely that any other company will now try to offer alternative digital broadcasting equipment.
