Why this top police officer says red light areas are a good thing

Article Abstract:

The UK government should consider creating legalized areas where street prostitutes can work, according to Richard Wells, Chief Constable of South Yorkshire. Within these areas, street prostitutes would not be in danger of prosecution. He feels that this approach would make a contribution towards minimizing the problems caused by street prostitution. He is also in favour of some element of legalization of brothels. He believes that modern-day role models are partly responsible for the high levels of violence in society.

The slavemaster who bought village girls for a Mona Lisa life of sex and degradation

Article Abstract:

The United Kingdom police believe that organized criminals are seeking to monopolise and expand the country's sex industry. They fear the activities of gangs from Eastern Europe and Hong Kong. The sex industry can be lucrative, as is shown by the case of a Brazilian, Carlos Pires, who brought in around 100 women from Brazil, some of whom were naive rural girls. Triad gangs are believed to operate in cities with major Chinese populations, and a Lithuanian has been discovered importing Russian women for prostitution.

Police chief heading for a brief encounter

Article Abstract:

Action should be taken against the growing trend towards barristers harassing witnesses, according to Ray White, chief constable of Dyfed Powys and the new president of the Association of Chief Police Officers. He also believes that there should be more widespread use of police video tape recordings of suspects and witnesses, with this becoming standard evidence in court. He supports police moves to improve conditions in courts for witnesses and to speed up court procedures.
