Why university is a journey too far

Article Abstract:

There are doubts over whether public funds should be used to pay for United Kingdom students living away from home. The decision of students to live apart from their parents is private, and becomes public when the state pays for a minority of young people to discover themselves. Some universities have a majority of students from the local area, and their academic performance does not suffer. Some regions with more universities gain more in public funds, and this is especially true of London.

A first among equals, Hardly

Article Abstract:

There is an apparent lack of standardization among United Kingdom university qualifications, with Cambridge University less generous in awarding first class degrees. Students from Cambridge may be expected to work harder, and students believe that this is the case. A division between different types of universities is likely to be inevitable in the UK, but the examination system could change, with more grades available rather than the existing form using firsts, seconds and the like.
