Article Abstract:

There has been a sharp rise in crime levels in Eastbourne, England, traditionally regarded as a sedate seaside resort. There have been particular problems with drug-related crime, and violent disputes over the right to distribute drugs have become common. Local people believe that the rise in crime is attributable to the fact that many Edwardian and Victorian boarding houses and hotels have been converted into hostels for people living on benefits. These then attract people from poor parts of London, England, the midlands and the north.

Taste for exotic pets puts snakes on the street

Article Abstract:

There has been a rise of between 150% and 200% since 1994 in the number of exotic pets which have escaped from captivity and are living wild in the UK. This has been the main factor behind the rise in the number of sightings of snakes and reptiles in the summer. In some cases, owners of exotic pets find these animals too expensive and time-consuming to keep, while in other cases they simply dump the pet when they want to go on holiday. The RSPCA now has to deal with exotic fauna as a matter of routine.
