Worcester woman and Woking man favour cloning. So that's OK then

Article Abstract:

The UK government's decision to create a panel on bio-ethics is not necessarily a positive development. Regardless of whether cloning humans is right or wrong, it raises many very difficult ethical issues, and national policy on this issue should not be determined by a small group of ordinary people. Morality is inevitably socially conditioned, but this does not mean that legislation should always reflect the views of the majority of ordinary people. Focus groups have a useful role, but they should not replace strong political leadership on key issues.

Stop this self-pity, Mr Hague, and get rid of your treasurer

Article Abstract:

UK Conservative party leader William Hague is misguided in continuing to support Michael Ashcroft, the party's Treasurer, who has been shown to have used his political influence to further his business interests. By adopting this stance, Hague is failing to recognize widely-held concerns about the repercussions of a single person contributing 10% of all donations to the Conservative party. He is also going against his commitment to turn down donations from abroad, as Ashcroft is domiciled in Belize.

Labour is right to abandon its plans to meddle in family life

Article Abstract:

It is right that the UK government has dropped plans to replace the current system of handling divorce, based on lawyers, with mediation and counselling. This approach would have ensured that the state interfered in the divorce process, as it would only have been possible to obtain a no-fault divorce quickly if you were willing to discuss the collapse of your marriage with somebody else. It is a cause for concern that the state can and should become involved in prolonging marriages.
