Yeltsin greets Jiang in hospital

Article Abstract:

Russian President Boris Yeltsin has been forced by pneumonia to hold his planned meeting with Chinese President Jiang Zemin in a hospital in Moscow, Russia. Official reports indicate that Yeltsin's illness, which is now receding, was connected with his distress over the murder of popular democratic parliamentarian Galina Starovoitova. It is clear that Yeltsin is not well enough to assume day-to-day control in Russia, and officials now make little attempt to conceal the fact that real power rests with Prime Minister Yevgeny Primakov.

Struggling Zhirinovsky tries sex appeal

Article Abstract:

Russian nationlist politician Vladimir Zhironovsky was extremely successful in the country's Duma elections in 1993. However, it now seems that his popularity is declining. He is facing strong competition from General Alexander Lebed, and his Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR) is a long way behind the Communists. Against this background, Zhironovsky has had to resort to using campaign messages with strong sexual overtones.
