You can have our aid, but don't ask for trade

Article Abstract:

EC policy towards membership for Poland, Czechoslovakia and Hungary fails to explain conditions, causing these countries problems in designing their establishments and planning their attempts to join the free market. Central European imports exclude agriculture and protect specific areas until 2002, discouraging enterprise. Changes in the CAP in May 1992 may help but the aim shoud be free trade with safeguards. Modernisation will reduce the need for products such as coal before the EC liberalisation plan can work.

Friendly Demon at the gateway to a bewitched world

Article Abstract:

Internet is a worldwide information network that can provide access to information such as library catalogues and databases. Demon Systems in London looks after one of the gateways into the system. For a signing-on fee of just under 15 pounds sterling and a monthly subscription of almost 12 pounds sterling a password is given. There are no other costs except for telephone charges and these are only from one's home to the nearest node, say London, even though one may be accessing data in California.

As a painkiller, they're pretty sharp

Article Abstract:

Electro-stimulation-analgesia (ESA) is a technique for anaesthesia derived from acupuncture. Acupuncture needles are inserted just in front of the ear and wired up to a current-delivering machine. This means half the usual quantity of anaesthetic is needed for an operation. Dr Elke Leube, consultant anaesthetist at the Waldfriede Hospital, Berlin, Germany has used ESA since 1983, saving about 4,000 pounds sterling a year. ESA stimulates the body's production of endorphins.
