You cannot degrade democracy and expect thanks

Article Abstract:

The disastrous results for the Conservative party in the recent local elections are partly a reflection of the fact that successive Conservative governments have undermined local democracy. Many loyal and hard-working Conservative local councillors have found themselves unable to make a real difference to local issues, and local election politics have therefore focused on the performance of the national government. The situation has now reached the stage where replacing Conservative councillors with Labour ones while not make any difference at all.

Private lives, public debate: the growing moral maze

Article Abstract:

A clear shift away from continental Europe has been one of the key characteristics of UK politics in 1996. It is likely that the UK will never be able to fully participate in a stronger European Union, even if the Labour party wins the next general election. There has also been a strong trend in 1996 towards closer links between people's private lives and public debates. News now tends to focus on lifestyle and individual choices, rather than simply on events and political developments.

Enter priestly men, to fill our moral void

Article Abstract:

Religious leaders are reasserting themselves, calling for a revival of moral values. They are challenging economic and scientific truths which have been developing since the 18th century and which have led to society's current focus on competitive individualism. However, they are using secular language to discuss moral issues, and are unlikely to be able to take this very far.
