You're invited to a bonding

Article Abstract:

UK Conservative party leader William Hague believes that encouraging unity among the party's MPs will play a key role in reviving its fortunes. He is keen to adopt some management strategies used by successful large companies, including bringing MPs together at a hotel for a weekend for morale-building sessions. It is clear that the Conservative party needs to be brought together, but some MPs, especially the older ones, have expressed doubts about whether Hague's approach is the right one.

The Naes try to swing it: in Scotland Borders fret on devolution

Article Abstract:

There will be a vote in Scotland on devolution in Sep 1997, and the Borders region will attract special interest. The region voted against devolution in a referendum in 1979, with 59.7% against compared to 51.6% in favor in Scotland as a whole. There may be a small majority in favor of devolution in 1997, if opinion polls forecast the results accurately. Critics argue that the proposed parliament for Scotland will not have much power and will be costly.
