5-year new car preview

Article Abstract:

Several trends will affect the automobile industry and automobile designs in the 21st century. These include the development of nickel-metal hydride batteries, use of computer-aided design programs and consolidations between European automakers. Industry forecasts from 1999 to 2003 are presented.

Automobiles that will be built from 1996 to the year 2000 will have features not found in earlier cars. Ford Motor Co. is expected to retain its leadership of the US market for cars and trucks. However, companies such as GM, Chrysler, Honda, Nissan, Hyundai and BMW will not remain far behind.

The 1998 NASCAR competitions featured automobile design innovations. The latest model of Ford Taurus contributed to the team being one of the top finishers. Another innovation is General Motor's NASCAR V8 engine which has a different valve angle configuration.
