A concerted effort

Article Abstract:

The first project that the National Science Foundation funded had to do with the construction or enhancement of engineering laboratory facilities-called equipment sites-at 15 universities. These resources are linked to one another to create a dynamic research network that promises to help investigators achieve advances in the field of earthquake simulation research.

State-of-the-Art laboratory an unprecedented challenge for engineers

Article Abstract:

A structural and architectural overview of the building lab modules are designed as column-free spaces with an elevated waffle slab that mimics slab-on-grade conditions is presented. The design concepts for the mock-ups were tested using computer simulations, and most flaws were discovered and fixed prior to mock-up construction.
