Formation of chlorinated dioxins ans furans in a hazardous-waste-firing industrial boiler

Article Abstract:

Researchers from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the ARCADIS Geraghty & Miller studied how reactive soot deposits promote the emissions of polychlorinated dibenzodioxin and dibenzofuran (PCDD/F) from industrial waste cofiring boilers even after the cofiring ceased for a long time.

A screening method for polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), dibenzofurans (PCDFs), and non-ortho polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in biological matrixes

Article Abstract:

In this study, a screening method was developed for the analysis of tetra- and penta-chlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/dibenzofurans (CDD/F), octa-CDF, and non-ortho polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in biological matrixes to reduce the cost and time of dioxin analysis. The study was broken down into an introduction, a discussion of the experiment and its results. Various tables and graphs accompany the article.

Prevention of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/dibenzofurans formation on municipal waste incinerator fly ash using nitrogen and sulfur compounds

Article Abstract:

The addition of compounds capable of forming stable complexes with metal ions can prevent the formation of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans in combustion processes. Adding ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, nitrilotriacetic acid or Na2S was found to inhibit the formation of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans on incinerator fly ash. With these compounds as inhibitors, formation was reduced by ca. 80-90% is achieved.
