A virus with a backbone: zebrafish join thee menagerie of animal models for human embryo development

Article Abstract:

The zebrafish is one of the latest animal models used by developmental biologists in their study of embryonic development. Zebrafish are vertebrates which have nervous systems simpler than that found in frogs and mice. Some of its characteristics that could be useful in research are its accessible and transparent embryo and its easily mutatable traits. Some scientists have already created transgenic zebra fish while others are studying the workings of its nervous system. The research potentials of zebra fish could be extended to the field of fisheries and food science.

Late bloomer

Article Abstract:

Findings about the critical period theory in language acquisition of children showed that the ability is present in nine-year-old children, debunking the previous limit of six-years. Refutation came from the study of a nine-year old who acquired linguistic proficiency despite his age and the absence of a left hemisphere.

Taiwanese Animal Phonography

Article Abstract:

A nature recording of the sounds made by frogs and insects in Taiwan is presented as "Taiwanese Animal Phonography". The recording highlights the fact that amazing sounds exist in nature and the animal kingdom and that most of the animal sounds might provide melodic inspiration to musicians.
