AIDS trials take on peer review

Article Abstract:

Members of the AIDS Clinical Trials Group (ACTG) charge that the group subverted its own process to ensure that a Harvard AIDS trial site would be funded. ACTG had planned to fund the 1st 29 sites, which excluded 27th-ranked Harvard, until a 'second layer' of peer review decided to fund 30 groups.

Somber news from the AIDS front

Article Abstract:

The AIDS conference focused on the expanding epidemic and the poor performance of anti-AIDS drugs. Hopeful studies presented included stemming the spread of AIDS by preventing other social diseases and vaccines based on cell-mediated immunity in healthy HIV-infected people.
