Academic networks

Article Abstract:

The University of Cambridge's engineering department is its largest, with 1,000 undergraduates and over 300 postgraduates. The department, which is able to attract high calibre students, has many partnerships with high-tech firms, including involvement in the development of a broadband wireless system that will provide Internet access via radio waves and is around 300 times faster than conventional systems. Other network research includes the use of surfaces, such as floors and desks, to provide conductivity without the need to bathe an area in electromagnetic radiation.

High fibres

Article Abstract:

Energis, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the National Grid, is a major operator of optical fibre networks in the UK. The optical fibre grid runs alongside the National Grid's existing overhead line network. Among the major problems associated with installing the system is its proximity to power lines carrying 400 KV of electric power. The Energis network, in use since 1995, carries most of the UK's Internet traffic and comprises more than 5,000 km of optical cable.
